Biography and references

Dr. Martin Grabherr graduated with a Master (Dipl. Ing.) in Electrical Engineering from Ulm University in 1995, master thesis on selective oxidation for VCSELs. He graduated PhD in Electrical Engineering from Ulm University in 2000, PhD thesis on high power VCSELs. In 2000 he was awarded with the 2nd rank Berthold-Leibinger-Innovation Price.

He is author and co-author of more than 100 publications on VCSELs and VCSEL applications. 

He Co-founded U-L-M Photonics (development, manufacturing, and sales of VCSELs) in 2000. He has acted in various executive management functions with Philips U-L-M Photonics (Philips acquired U-L-M Photonics GmbH in 2006) including: Operations Manager, General Manager, Dir. Business Development/Marketing&Sales.

Main achievements in business development are the introduction of VCSELs for oxygen sensing (2002), PC laser mice (2005), active optical cables (2007), and sensors in smart phones (2015). Details can be accessed from the reference list at the right.

Dr. Martin Grabherr founded Priolas GmbH in 2017 and is acting as a consultant in optoelectonics, in particular in design, product development, application know-how, and manufacturing of VCSELs, supporting the interface between VCSEL suppliers and VCSEL users.

Leading the Priolas team and with support from a strong technology network, he is developing, manufacturing, and globally selling specialty VCSELs offered by Priolas GmbH.
